I have found the best way for me to prepare Zelma Rose for the holiday rush is to count backwards from my scheduled shows and peak sales times. Selling across multiple channels is great, but can leave some room for uncertainty when accounting for production times. While I might have a good idea of what my stockists will order, and can hazard a guess at what my Etsy and website sales will be, I find the hardest market for me to predict is what will sell at shows.
For this reason, I focus a lot of my holiday production time making for shows. What I don't sell, becomes inventory, and that is a great place to be in the midst of a holiday push. Come Thanksgiving, I'm always happy to have planned far ahead with inventory so I can meet the demands of upcoming shows and that magic Black Friday/Cyber Monday traffic.
Counting backwards from each show and significant shopping hot spot lets me know how many weeks I have to get my display together, decide upon inventory and pricing, and make a plan for promotion. Most importantly, counting backwards helps when it comes to ordering supplies. Give yourself some wiggle roon. Especially this time of year, it is not uncommon for suppliers to run out and have to reorder!
So I encourage you to sit down with your calendar and magic marker - and start markin' it up! Check back next week for more tips.
